Guardant Health Joins Forces With James Van Der Beek to Raise Colorectal Cancer Awareness

Guardant Health, a frontrunner in precision oncology, partners with actor and health advocate James Van Der Beek on a new initiative to shed light on the importance of screening for colorectal cancer (CRC). This push is all about Shield, a blood test for CRC that got the FDA's approval in 2023.

Many adults over 45 are still not getting tested enough. This team-up aims to boost early detection efforts by showcasing Shield as an easy and open alternative to the old ways.

James Van Der Beek opens up about his silent cancer battle to raise awareness

Actor James Van Der Beek recently shared his tough fight with stage 3 colorectal cancer that he almost did not catch. At 46 and in peak physical condition, Van Der Beek said he was blindsided by the diagnosis, underscoring how deceptive the disease can be. Now, he wants others, mainly those over 45, not to skip their screening.

He stressed the value of early detection and has teamed up with Guardant to promote a noninvasive blood test named Shield. Van Der Beek pointed out it's an easier choice for people who fear usual checks. His main point: knowing and acting fast can save lives. In his words (as per businesswire.com):

"I was 46 years old, in great physical shape, and had no idea I was living with stage 3 colorectal cancer. It's the second most deadly cancer, but the most curable when caught in its early stages, making screening crucial. I was relieved to learn about Guardant's Shield blood test because it's a more pleasant and convenient way to get screened, especially for those who've been hesitating. I've learned a lot on my cancer journey, but I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. Simply put, getting screened can save your life. If you're 45 or older, make sure you talk to your doctor about screening guidelines and your options."

Guardant Health Co-CEO talks about the partnership with James Van Der Beek

Guardant Health is working hard to make it easier for people to access cancer screening all over the country. They are highlighting actor James's personal experience as a compelling example. Co-CEO AmirAli Talasaz thanked James for sharing his story to show how important it is to diagnose cancer in the early stage.

As the company shows off its Shield blood test for checking colorectal cancer, Talasaz stressed that convenience and broader access could help close the gap in early diagnosis rates. With James's help, Guardant Health wants to urge more people in America to get tested. In his words (as per businesswire.com):

"We are grateful to James for the work he has done to raise awareness with his personal story that shows the importance of screening and early detection. Our goal is to ensure that everyone who should be screened for colorectal cancer gets screened - and the Shield blood test is a major step forward in making screening more convenient and accessible across the country. We are committed to saving lives through early detection and - with James' help - we hope more Americans are encouraged to take this critical step."
