Candace Owens is facing a lawsuit from Brigitte and Emmanuel Macron, CBS News reported on July 23.

The French President and First Lady are suing for various defamatory implications and claims made through her podcast. According to the Macrons’ 219-page filing, Owens is being accused of propagating the narrative that Brigitte was born a man. The lawsuit states that the conservative podcaster began promoting the claim in March 2024, which originated from a 2021 conspiracy theory.

The Macrons’ lawyers cited the right-wing influencer’s Daily Wire podcast series, Candace Owens. In a now-unavailable episode, the commentator ran the story with the following title:

“INSANE. This Is The BIGGEST Political Scandal In Human History”

In one of her X posts from March 2024, Candace called Brigitte Macron a man. She highlighted how the episode was “blowing up” and wrote,

“I just want to say—After looking into this, I would stake my entire professional reputation on the fact that Brigitte Macron is in fact a man. Any journalist or publication that is trying to dismiss this plausibility is immediately identifiable as establishment. I have never seen anything like this in my life. The implications here are terrifying.”

    She added,

“I do not intend to let up on this story and I am calling on other journalists to look into this explosive story and report accordingly.”

Owens parted ways with The Daily Wire in March 2024 but continued covering the conspiracy theory on her YouTube channel. She later released an eight-part series focused on the story while maintaining her stance.

Candace Owens continued covering the Macrons and launched a series on the French First Lady

After leaving The Daily Wire, the conservative political commentator published another story on France’s President and his wife in June 2024. Speaking about Brigitte Macron, Candace repeatedly claimed that she was born biologically male. In the subsequent months, the YouTuber published several follow-ups before launching an eight-part series, Becoming Brigitte, drawing on various conspiracy theories.

Originally, Natacha Rey Amadine Roy alleged that the French First Lady’s birth name was Jean-Michel Trogneux and claimed she assumed the identity of one Brigitte Trogneux. Another unverified claim promoted by Rey was that Brigitte Macron’s first husband never existed and she was not the biological mother of her three children.

The Macrons addressed the allegations in their lawsuit and claimed that Rey is a key source for Owens and another investigative journalist, Xavier Poussard. In the filing, the French President’s lawyers claimed,

“The Defendants made the defamatory Implications with actual malice, including with actual, subjective awareness of their falsity.”

The lawsuit also alleges that Candace Owens made defamatory implications for media attention and added,

“[The Defendants] refused to retract the Implications even after being confronted with additional evidence of their falsity.”

The suit claims Owens’ statements caused economic and reputational damages to Macron and his wife. The couple is seeking unspecified damages and is also demanding a jury trial, based on the 22-count lawsuit filed in Delaware Superior Court, per CBS News.

Candace Owens doubles down on her claims after being served with a lawsuit

After the Macrons sued the conservative podcaster, she responded in a YouTube video. She called the lawsuit a publicity stunt by Brigitte and reiterated her claims. In the video, Candace Owens attacked the French First Lady by saying,

“You can try to split hairs and how you feel and how you've always felt like a woman. What I am saying is that you were born a man and you will die a man. That's the point I'm making. So, give us a sample. I'll send my doctors to take your blood. Figure it out real quick. However you want to go about this.”

The podcaster also reiterated her claim that POTUS Trump called her to say that French President Macron asked him to order her to stop talking about Brigitte Macron. Owens revealed that her legal team may need to depose the US head of state to get to the bottom of the conversation.
