Ray J spoke about the struggles in his bond with his sister Brandy and other relatives during an interview on the Drop The Lo podcast hosted by Evelyn Lozada and Shaniece Hairston. He shared details about the continuing conflicts between him and Brandy along with the larger family issues they face.

When someone asked Ray J about his relationship with Brandy, he said there is love between them but he feels distant and not understood by his family.

"I love my sister. But I’m an embarrassment… to them," Ray J said. "I never wanted to be accepted [by my family]. I just feel like I’m an embarrassment. [...] You want me to be something else, but I’m superseding everything y’all doing," he added, addressing his family more directly.

Even though their personal relationship feels strained, Ray J mentioned that their kids stay connected. He shared that his son Epik went to Brandy’s house, and her daughter Sy’Rai often hangs out with his children. According to Ray J, they still engage quickly at family get-togethers even though they don't have lengthy conversations anymore. He explained, “I see her, I’m like, ‘What’s up?’ But we haven’t talked.”

The tension between Ray J and Brandy has caught public attention, tied to Ray J’s behavior on social media and streaming sites. In one instance, Brandy reacted to him reaching out to content creator Kai Cenat by sending him a worried message. Ray J then shared a screenshot of her message on Instagram. Along with the screenshot, he wrote about feeling misunderstood by his family.

Ray J used that post to talk about the difficulty of aligning his personality and career with his family’s expectations. He apologized to both Brandy and their mom for how he comes across, admitting that their opinions mean a lot to him, even though it sometimes leaves him feeling alone.

"My sister hates who I am!" he captioned a screenshot of the text on IG. "And all I’m doing is being Myself! I don’t know how to be better than who I am. I tried. But I get depressed trying to change when I don’t have a wife anymore and I have NO STABILITY!! I’m sorry to my sister for who I am. And my mom. – I don’t give a F about nobody elses feelings — but when it’s my family it makes me feel alone."

Though the siblings disagree, their kids staying connected creates a sense of togetherness in the family.
