According to IMDb, Thom’s mother was murdered by her son and Thom’s brother, Troy, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia and is currently serving his time in jail. On the other hand, Craig, his other brother, shot himself after being in depression for a long time in 2000. 

    After the case, Thom also published a memoir, "Forgiving Troy,” which won nine awards. In 2007, he was honored with the Best Indie Autobiography award by USA Book News for his powerful and inspiring memoir. Apart from being a celebrated author and actor, Thom is an artist as well. The character has been at the centre of several major plots, mainly because of his chaotic love angles, notably with Cricket Blair and Nina Webster. Apart from that, he has also been at the centre due to the power struggle at the Chancellor Industry. 

    In 1989, the character was presumed dead in a car crash, shortly after marrying Nina. Together, they had a son, Phillip Chancellor IV (Chance), who recently died in the episode that aired on July 28, 2025. Anyhow, the character returned to Genoa in 2009, revealing that he had faked his death. In a dramatic event, he revealed that he faked his death in fear of standing up to the Chancellor's name, and shortly after, he revealed he was gay. This major twist brought a major turning point in the history of daytime soap operas.
