Martin Short Roasts Jimmy Fallon to His Face, Calling Him a 'Proud Boy'

"James Thomas Fallon. My God, your name screams out diversity."
  • Martin Short stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night, and he came prepared with a series of jokes he rattled off as Fallon attempted to interview him.

Short has been known to prepare in great detail before his talk show appearances, and this one did not disappoint, as he roasted Fallon to his face.

"James Thomas Fallon. My God, your name screams out diversity," Short said, right as the start of the interview. He went on to imply Fallon was a member of the Proud Boys and played golf with the Saudi Crown Prince.

"Now I haven't seen you since the big Saudi golf tournament," he said. "Who knew that you and the Crown Prince were such buddies? The giggling and the giggling."

As Fallon laughed, Short continued, "In fact, tell everyone what you were telling me about how the Proud Boys is so much more than a club, what did you mean by that?"

Fallon finally pivoted to Short's experience working with Steve Martin and the duo's Emmy nominations for Only Murders in the Building.

When Fallon asked what he's learned from Martin, Short replied, "I've learned that he will pay top dollar for clean urine ... I've learned from him that you don't need to have a pool to have a pool boy."

Having run through his joke list, Short got (somewhat) serious. Both Martin and Short are nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, and he's hopeful one of them will take home the Emmy. "If I can't win I hope that he wins, but I can win, so screw him," said Short. "If I lose, I'm gonna send Will Smith up to slap him."

"Here's the thing," he added. "If someone had told me 20 years ago that I would be on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon with all these Emmy nominations, I would have said, 'Jimmy Fallon?'"

Only Murders in the Building is currently streaming on Hulu. The Season 2 finale debuts next Tuesday, August 23.
