Minnie Driver has joined the fifth season of Emily in Paris. According to Variety's report dated May 15, production will begin in Rome in May. The actress will play Princess Jane, the friend of Sylvie, played by Leroy-Beaulieu.
Known for her performance in the film Good Will Hunting, Minnie Driver has also acted in Owning Mahowny, The Phantom of the Opera, The Riches, Speechless, and The Witcher: Blood Origin.
Alongside Driver, the cast of Emily in Paris includes Lily Collins, Lucas Bravo, Lucien Laviscount, Eugenio Franceschini, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, Samuel Arnold, Bruno Gouery, William Abadie, and Ashley Park.
In the September 12, 2024, interview with TVLine, Darren Star revealed that the fifth season of Emily in Paris will showcase the cultural differences between the French and Italians and how Emily deals with it. Star also clarified that Emily will eventually return to Paris.
"I feel like it just expands the universe of the show. Just at the point that Emily has gotten comfortable in Paris, she's sort of thrown into another country where she's going to experience some cultural differences, and also, I think there's cultural differences to explore, and we do, between French and Italians. It's a whole new world, but it doesn't mean that we're leaving Paris," Star stated.
In an interview with Deadline on September 12, 2024, the show's creator jokingly said, Emily didn't change her Instagram handle after moving to Rome. Darren Star repeated that the show's title won't change because Emily is in Rome in season 5, and she won't stay in Rome for a long time.
"She didn't change her Instagram handle to Emily in Rome. She is working in Rome sometimes. Sylvie's company has an office in Rome. Emily's getting that on its feet. I don’t necessarily think that it means a permanent, in my mind, it's definitely not a permanent move to Rome," Darren Star said.
In the same interview, Darren Star hinted that Gabriel might pursue Emily and go to Rome. Although he did not explicitly mention a love triangle of Emily, Gabriel, and Marcello, Star stated that after their breakup, Gabriel felt as if there was an "unfinished business" between them.
For the unversed, in the series, Emily and Gabriel have an on-and-off relationship. They met as neighbors and developed a romantic relationship while Gabriel was dating Camille. At the end of the fourth season, Camille and Gabriel break up, and Camille leaves Paris.
"They certainly had a big fight and a cooling off period. But I think he realized that by the end of the season, that there's something that he doesn't want to let Emily go. I don't know what that means. Doesn't necessarily mean they're going to be together instantly or ever. I don't know, but I think he feels there's unfinished business with the two of them," Star stated.
Emily in Paris' four seasons are available on Netflix for streaming.
