Rob Reiner, who was an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, passed away on Sunday, December 14. According to The Guardian, following his untimely death, Reiner is being mourned by colleagues across the industry and beyond. However, it was Donald Trump, who took to Truth Social to criticize the celebrated director. This move has attracted widespread criticism from several quarters, though the far-right political activist has shown support for the President's statements. She took to X (formerly Twitter) and said:
"Psychosis is a real thing."
Rob Reiner, who was born on March 6, 1947, to actress Estelle Reiner and Grammy-winning comedian Carl Reiner, rose to fame with his role in All in the Family. According to People Magazine, Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, with whom he shared three children, were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home. Their bodies were discovered by the couple's eldest daughter, Romy Reiner, after which the Los Angeles Fire Department was called to the residence. According to Variety, a statement was released by Rob Reiner's family, which read:
“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time."
Later on that same day, the couple's second child, Nick Reiner, was arrested in connection with his parents' murder. At the moment, Nick Reiner is in police custody without bail.
Rob Reiner was known for his lifelong support of various progressive causes and as a strong critic of President Donald Trump. According to People Magazine, Reiner had, on various occasions, called out Trump, most notably in 2017, when he called out Trump following the 2016 Presidential election. Most recently, in an interview from back in October, he described Trump's current term as something "beyond McCarthy era-esque."
Following Rob Reiner's death, Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Monday, December 15, writing that despite being a once "very talented movie director," Reiner was now suffering from what he called "TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME." A part of the post read:
"A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS."
This statement prompted a wave of reactions from many people, with many criticizing the President for making such comments about the acclaimed director despite their political differences. Actor Patrick Schwarzenegger, Whoopi Goldberg, California Governor Gavin Newsom, and many others have criticized Donald Trump's statements. Some individuals who stood by the President amid the backlash include conservative political commentator Laura Loomer, who took to X (formerly Twitter), writing a long post, a part of which read:
"Trump is right. Reiner himself sounded insane when he would speak."
Donald Trump later doubled down on his previous statements during a press conference, saying, “I wasn’t a fan of his at all, he was a deranged person as far as Trump is concerned." He later spoke about how Reiner had previously called out the President for being a "friend of Russia," which he claimed allegedly affected him "career-wise."
