In a statement released to Deadline, the 56-year-old McMahon’s wife, Kelly McMahon confirmed his passing. She said,
“With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer. Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans. His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible.”
Asking for privacy at this tragic time, Kelly continued, and said,
“We ask for support during this time to allow our family to grieve in privacy. And we wish for all of those to whom Julian brought joy, to continue to find joy in life. We are grateful for the memories.”
Julian McMahon’s career in the entertainment industry began with a few roles in Australian soaps in the late 1980s. Most notably, he appeared in The Power, the Passion and Home and Away, noted Deadline.
McMahon then began appearing in roles in American soaps, such as Another World in 1993, as per IMDb. He transitioned to roles in drama series, playing Cole Turner on the supernatural series, Charmed from 2000 to 2005 and Dr. Christian Troy in Ryan Murphy’s Nip/Tuck for 7 years from 2003 to 2010.
McMahon also played the villain, Dr. Doom in the Fantastic Four film series which included Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, in 2005 and 2007, respectively. In 2007, he also appeared opposite Sandra Bullock in the psychological thriller, Premonition. He featured alongside Milla Jovovich in Faces in the Crowd in 2011.
McMahon featured as Patrick Dawson in 2018’s Monster Party, and as Jonah in Hulu’s Runaways.
Most recently, McMahon had appeared in FBI: Most Wanted from 2020 onwards. However, the actor exit the show in 2022, as per People Magazine. At the time, McMahon made a statement on his departure, and told Deadline,
“Over the past few months, the producers of FBI: Most Wanted and I have had discussions about my departure from the show in favor of additional creative pursuits and the transition of my character Jess LaCroix. These ongoing conversations have given us an opportunity to orchestrate a seamless and productive way for me to leave the show.”
In 2018, Julian McMahon opened up about his choice of roles and the preparation that goes behind them in a conversation with Screen Rant. Speaking about the villainous nature of some of the characters he has played over time, McMahon said,
“Like Victor von Doom was a badly scarred individual who was very ego-driven to contrast what he looked like—all of these kind of elements that force him to be kind of outcast. He felt very vulnerable and kind of put off by the world.”
Comparing the character with his role on Runaways, he said,
“And then Jonah is discovering—I don’t want to say anything out of line for Runaways—but Jonah’s searching for a piece of himself that… I mean, it’s been centuries he’s been looking for it. He’s got this excuse—they both have excuses, in a way, to be on these missions that they’re on, and it kind of gives you a bit of leeway in regards to what they do, so it’s maybe a little bit of justification.”
As of the writing of this article, it is unclear what type of cancer Julian McMahon had been dealing with.
