Season 4, episode 12 of Friends titled “The One with the Embryos” is a fan favorite that does an excellent job of balancing between humor and character growth. Sure the title brings to light Phoebe’s role as a surrogate for her brother’s kids which is a large part of the episode, but what really stands out to many is the trivia contest put on by Monica and Rachel against Chandler and Joey, putting their apartments at stake.

Did Ross sabotage the girls’ chances in the trivia game in Friends?

The competition is very intense which leads up to a high-stakes lightning round. Each team is given 30 seconds to answer as many questions as they can. When a player gives a wrong answer in that round Ross steps in with the next question. Or at least that is how it goes throughout the whole play-off until the final question.

One moment, in particular, has sparked debate and given rise to an intriguing fan theory: the idea that Monica and Rachel were always meant to lose the game, and Ross’s behavior in the final seconds supports this.

During the girls’ final question, Ross asks, “What is Chandler Bing’s job?” Rachel immediately responds, “Transponster,” which Monica quickly points out is not even a real word. But unlike previous incorrect answers throughout the game, Ross does not correct them or move on. Instead, he waits silently while the clock ticks down, giving the girls time to flounder. Ultimately, they fail to come up with the right answer—leading to their shocking loss and the boys claiming their apartment.

The way the rules were enforced inconsistently has led some fans to speculate that Ross might have had an unconscious—or maybe even a deliberate—bias. Given how close he is with Chandler, it’s possible that Ross didn’t want to embarrass him by admitting that no one, not even his best friends, really knew what his job was. Or perhaps the comedic potential of the girls losing their apartment was just too tempting to ignore.

On the flip side, some folks argue it was all in good fun, attributing Ross's behavior to getting swept up in the moment or being a bit inconsistent when the pressure was on. After all, he’s not exactly a seasoned game show host, and the game was created on the fly.

For the die-hard fans of Friends who have watched that episode countless times, this moment stands out as a peculiar break from the otherwise structured rules of the game. Whether it was intentional or not, the lingering question has become one of the most memorable in Friends history—and it leaves us wondering if Monica and Rachel ever really had a shot.
