Actor Lukas Gage is prioritizing himself following his 2024 divorce from Chris Appleton. During a conversation with People magazine at the Los Angeles premiere of his show Overcompensating on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Gage reflected on his life post-separation.
Commenting on how the show mirrors life, Gage told People:
"You got to love yourself fully before you can be ready to jump in anything. I'm doing a lot of me work and I think that's what the show is a little about."
For the unversed, the actor sparked dating rumors with celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton in early 2023. The latter confirmed their relationship during a sit-down on The Drew Barrymore Show in March. A month later, Lukas announced his marriage to Appleton in an Instagram post.
However, in November, following seven months together, the hairstylist filed for a divorce from Lukas Gage. They reached a settlement in June 2024.
Talking about his new show and life, Lukas Gage told People:
"Overcompensating is if you're trying too hard to be something that you're not and trying to fit into these molds, you got to just start with yourself and you got to be authentic to yourself."
He continued:
"So I'm doing Lukas love time."
When questioned what "Lukas love time" entailed, the 29-year-old said it could be anything from meditation to journaling or even going to the spa. Calling it his "spiritual practice," Gage noted that there were times he "just sat with (himself)" quietly for hours.
The actor is guest-starring in Amazon Prime's new series Overcompensating. The comedy-drama centers around Benny, a closeted former high school football player, who befriends a college outsider to fit in.
Lukas Gage and Chris Appleton first sparked dating rumors in February 2023 after they shared photos from their trip together to Mexico on Instagram. They soon made a red carpet appearance together at the Vanity Fair Campaign Hollywood event in March.
During his March 15 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, the hairstylist confirmed their relationship, telling the host he was "very happy." He added:
"Very much in love, and I feel very grateful to be able to share my time with someone very special. Love is a really special thing, and I think meeting someone you connect with is really, really special."
Lukas Gage echoed the sentiment during his interview on the Today show a week later. He told co-host Dylan Dreyer:
"I feel very happy, very lucky and very much in love."
Following several public appearances together, a "source" told People magazine (April 5) that the couple was engaged. On April 23, they walked the red carpet at the Daily Front Row Fashion L.A. Awards wearing matching bands on their left hands. According to People, just a couple of days before, the pair obtained a marriage license in Clark County, Nevada.
At the time, Appleton won the Hair Artist of the Year award. While accepting the award, he gave a shout-out to his partner, saying:
"Thank you to Lukas for being my rock and putting up with me. And making me feel perfect when I know I'm not."
Lukas Gage confirmed their marriage a few days later in an Instagram post.
However, just seven months down the road, Appleton filed for a divorce from the You actor. Citing the legal documents, People reported that he marked "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for their separation. Additionally, the pair had a postnuptial agreement in place. In June 2024, the estranged couple finalized their divorce.
During his March 2024 appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Lukas Gage commented on getting married after dating for a short amount of time. He told host Andy Cohen:
"I had a manic episode for six months."
He continued:
"I don't know literally what went through my head. But we live and we learn."
The White Lotus star also asserted there was no cheating involved.
The same month, during the premiere of Road House, Lukas Gage told People, "Everything was great." He noted that it had been a year of "learning, growing, (and) changing."
Chris Appleton has not publicly reacted to Gage's comments.
