A sequel to Sony’s 2010 Oscar-winning film The Social Network is reportedly in development, and high-profile casting conversations are already underway. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Emmy-winning actor Jeremy Allen White and this year’s Best Actress Oscar winner Mikey Madison are in early talks to lead the much-anticipated sequel.
The project, however, is still in development with no formal offers having been extended yet. Aaron Sorkin is set to write the script and also direct the sequel, which is inspired by the series of articles Jeff Horwitz wrote for The Wall Street Journal known as The Facebook Files. Sorkin is also actively assembling a cast and budget for studio approval.
The original The Social Network, directed by David Fincher, chronicled the meteoric rise of Facebook and earned eight Academy Award nominations. The sequel, however, will take a darker and more urgent turn, exploring the platform’s role in global misinformation, the mental health impact on teens, and its link to the January 6 Capitol insurrection.
If deals close, the leads of ‘THE SOCIAL NETWORK 2’ would be:

The sequel is set to focus on the revelations of ex-Facebook employee-turned-whistleblower Frances Haugen and the journalistic investigation known as The Facebook Files, penned by Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz.
The American actress Mikey Madison is in discussions to portray Haugen, a former data engineer responsible for exposing Facebook’s knowledge of the harm caused by its own platform by disclosing tens of thousands of Facebook's internal documents to the Securities and Exchange Commission and The Wall Street Journal in 2021.
Madison has quickly become one of the most sought-after talents in Hollywood, with critically acclaimed performances in Anora, Scream, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and the upcoming A24 horror film The Masque of the Red Death.
Jeremy Allen White, meanwhile, is being eyed to play Horwitz, the investigative journalist who brought The Facebook Files to public attention. Sources compare the tone of the film to that of The Insider and Spotlight, both known for their intense focus on whistleblowers and investigative journalism. If the deals go through, White and Madison will likely portray central figures in what is shaping up to be a tense, topical, and socially charged film.
While Sony has not issued an official statement, insiders describe the project as a top priority for the studio. Aaron Sorkin, who won an Oscar for writing the original screenplay, will not only pen the script but also take the director’s chair for the sequel. Producing alongside him are Todd Black, Peter Rice and Stuart Besser.
Best known for his role as chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto in FX’s The Bear, Jeremy Allen White has already earned two Emmy Awards and is a frontrunner for a third this coming September. White rose to fame through his breakthrough role as Phillip “Lip” Gallagher in the comedy drama series Shameless.
On the big screen, Jeremy Allen White is set to make a major splash this year. White stars as Bruce Springsteen in the upcoming biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, which explores the making of the artist’s critically lauded album Nebraska. Additionally, he is also set to star as Rotta the Hutt in The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will be released in 2026. His other known projects include The Iron Claw, Homecoming, and Twelve.
Casting Jeremy Allen White in a lead role for The Social Network 2 would mark yet another milestone in the actor’s rapidly rising career. His blend of intensity, emotional authenticity, and critical acclaim makes him a fitting choice for a role that requires both journalistic grit and narrative weight.
