Building the Band released its latest episodes (5 to 7) on July 16, 2025, continuing the story of young performers forming groups and competing for a chance at stardom. Among them is Conor Smith, a member of the band Midnight ’Til Morning, whose history in reality TV stretches back to The Voice Australia.

At just 16, Conor competed in the eighth season of the singing show in 2019, auditioning with Bruce Springsteen’s I’m on Fire and later performing Madonna’s Ray of Light. His return to the spotlight on Building the Band adds depth to his character, as viewers now see a more developed version of the young singer who once said he felt like he was “born in the wrong era.”

In the latest Building the Band episodes, Conor’s past experience is both a strength and a source of tension. His romantic involvement with Alison Ogden from a rival group, Sweet Seduction, sparked conflict within his band, with members questioning his commitment.

As Midnight ’Til Morning prepared for their performance of “Iris,” internal struggles threatened to overshadow their progress. With the next episode set to release on July 23, the group’s ability to move forward now depends on Conor’s focus and the band’s unity.

During a conversation in episode 6, Conor revealed that he spent a late night talking with Alison and admitted,

“We may have kissed. We went to bed at 5 a.m.”

This created immediate concern within his group. Mason told him, “Not date two tonight, my friend,” while Zach noted that the band needed him to “leave the whole girlfriend situation behind him.” When Conor arrived late to rehearsal, tensions rose further.

Mason and Conor had a one-on-one conversation where Conor brushed off the issue, saying he had just taken a nap and was listening to music. However, his actions began to affect the group’s preparation, leading to a larger confrontation. Shane, feeling betrayed, said,

“I feel betrayed by someone I thought was my brother.”

Conor acknowledged their points but also expressed his emotional attachment to Alison, stated that she had "no regrets." The band eventually asked him to stay, with Zach saying, “I don’t want you going anywhere, Conor.” That support prompted Conor to apologize. He told them,

“I shouldn’t have been like, focusing my time on Alison… it was almost like a brainwash.”

The group moved forward with a renewed sense of unity, ready to take the stage again. Conor’s experience on The Voice Australia may have given him performance confidence, but Building the Band has tested his ability to balance personal emotions with group responsibilities.

Midnight ’Til Morning takes the stage after emotional reset in Building the Band

Episodes 5 through 7 featured several group performances, but all eyes were on Midnight ’Til Morning as they prepared their cover of “Iris.” The group, having worked through personal conflict, stepped back into rehearsals and focused on delivering a cohesive set. Judges Kelly Rowland, Nicole Scherzinger and Liam Payne observed their performance alongside other bands, including Sweet Seduction and their “I Want It That Way” performance, and girl group Emotions with the song of the same name.

Earlier in episode 5, Midnight ’Til Morning performed “Ocean Eyes,” a track that helped maintain their place in the competition. However, their bond was tested soon after, with personal dynamics threatening group stability. With Conor recommitting to the band and apologizing for his previous distractions, they returned to rehearsals with a more focused mindset.

Though the results of the latest performances weren’t announced at the end of episode 7, the judges acknowledged the progress of each band. With episode 8 of Building the Band scheduled for July 23, viewers are expected to learn who advances and who falls short. For Midnight ’Til Morning, the focus now returns to the music, as the band attempts to build on its momentum.
