His unexplained death has jolted the department and the community, whose officials are calling it “devastating.” The Dunwoody Police Department said in a touching statement that it was mourning his loss.
"It is with heavy heart and deep sadness that we share the unexpected loss of Detective Jordan Laverty... His absence has left a void that will not easily be filled. We are heartbroken and wrapping our arms around his family in love and support," the department said in a statement.
A GoFundMe set up by the Dunwoody Police Foundation has become popular, with over $10,000 raised in just hours. The fundraiser is to help with funeral costs as well as to provide financial security for his wife and daughters.
"Jordan leaves behind a wife and four children. Please keep his family, friends, and the Dunwoody Police Department in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time," the GoFundMe campaign read.
The above campaign description stresses the legacy left by Laverty and, on the other hand, there is not much information available relating to his family. Laverty’s cause of death is currently unknown, as investigation continues.
The Dunwoody Police Foundation is asking the public to remember Laverty's family, teammates and friends in their thoughts during the challenging time. For anyone who wants to provide assistance, they added the following in the campaign:
"If you would like to support the family, they've authorized the Dunwoody Police Foundation to announce this GoFundMe page as the official way to donate. Thank you for your support."
The GoFundMe page has been set to collect a total 75k, and has already had 87 donations in total. The death of Detective Laverty is a grim reminder of the toll paid by law enforcement officers and their families.
