Amid the scenes of destruction left by catastrophic flooding in the Texas Hill Country, a viral video from Camp Mystic is melting hearts around the world, showing young campers singing worship songs to soothe their fears as they're evacuated from the ruined Christian summer camp.

Camp Mystic, which is more than 100 years old, is located in Kerr County, Texas, and was flooded when the Guadalupe River rose because of copious amounts of rain on July 4.

The flash floods came through with such force that cabins, cars and trees were destroyed, leaving campers and staff scrambling to safety. According to CNN, hundreds escaped, but 10 girls and one counselor have been confirmed as missing.

The video from Camp Mystic has led to an outpouring of emotion online. The young campers were commended by many viewers for their resilience and faith. One X user wrote:

    "Their strength is truly inspiring."

"We used to sing that song, Pass It On, at the camp I went to as a girl. I can’t begin to imagine what they have been though," said an internet user.

"Their singing is so sweet to hear, uplifting amongst the tragedy," remarked another.

"Amazing they can sing without bawling! I want to bawl! The lives lost are heartbreaking," wrote an X user.

"I am so sorry these children have witnessed such horrific events. God bless them all," commented a user.

Amidst the several condolences and support offered online, some X users were outraged at the fact that the survivors were being filmed in such a dire situation, with some users even calling it an engagement-farming technique.

"Engagement farming off these little girls and their ordeal is despicable," one user commented.

"This should not be allowed to happen. Filming them in there grieving at this time is a shanda!" wrote another.

More about the videos and insights made available to the public regarding the rescued girls from Camp Mystic

The frightening escape was captured on videos posted by Devon Paige, a camp nurse. One video that went viral on TikTok shows a group of girls, sitting silently at the back of a bus, singing campfire worship songs as they were driven to a reunification point to be reunited with their families.

The singing was an attempt “to try and calm everyone” amid the chaos, Devon Paige wrote in her caption.

Other videos posted by Paige show the destruction that the floods have left in their tracks. According to People, in one video footage, adults in the back of a law enforcement vehicle gasped and cried out as it drove them past overturned vehicles and uprooted trees.

Unfortunately, several campers and staff have already been reported dead. Relatives of young victims Lila Bonner and Eloise Peck have also spoken of their anguish, and the family of nine-year-old Janie Hunt, a cousin of Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, shared their heartbreak on social media.

According to reports, Richard “Dick” Eastland, the camp’s director, died trying to save campers. So far, flooding from the storms has resulted in at least 81 deaths in Texas (BBC). Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of emergency and ordered a Day of Prayer for victims and survivors.
