Warner Bros. has released a new teaser for Uncaged Fury, an in-universe fictional film starring the character Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban. The teaser is included within a wider marketing campaign for the release of upcoming Mortal Kombat II later this year. Stylized in its action and self-aware in its tone, the teaser provides a glimpse at Johnny Cage's character and brings an extra level of interaction to the marketing strategy of the film.
The teaser shows Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, doing what he does best—pummeling foes and being his outrageous, cool self. He is caught sporting his classic shades and spewing his signature jokes while dispatching the bad guys.
The subtitle at the end reads, Prepare for the return of Johnny F. Cage, which is a nice touch for the fans who've been waiting to see him in action once again. The teaser is enjoyable, flashy and energetic—just like Johnny Cage. It's also a good way to reintroduce the character to the fans before he enters into the main story in Mortal Kombat II.
Although Uncaged Fury is a fictional movie, it performs an actual service to generate hype for the sequel. In the Mortal Kombat II universe, Johnny Cage is not only a fighter—but a movie star. Thus, the teaser perfectly integrates into his plot.
What's so great about this campaign is that it feels so real. There's even a mock IMDb page and a website for Uncaged Fury, making it sound like a real film. It's a great way to maintain fan enthusiasm while they wait for the actual movie.
Mortal Kombat II continues the story from the first film. We’ll see Cole Young teaming up with Earth’s greatest fighters to protect their world from the evil forces of Outworld. This time Johnny Cage joins the team, and fans can’t wait to see how he fits into the group.
Director Simon McQuoid returns and the cast is chock-full of talent—particularly Karl Urban, who is ideal for playing Cage. The sequel will have larger battles, additional characters and plenty of surprises.
