Didarul Islam, a police officer, was fatally shot by a gunman inside a corporate skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan on Monday, July 28, the NYPD confirmed.

Following the unfortunate incident, Officer Islam received overwhelming support from the community. After Tom Grech, a Malverne resident, created a GoFundMe for Didarul, many contributed to help his family. The fundraiser for the fallen NYPD officer has raised more than $50,000.

Apart from GoFundMe, a Fundthefirst.com campaign is also active for Didarul Islam. As of this writing, it has received more than $150,000. The fundraiser's organizer has described Officer Islam as a devoted father, a beloved husband, a caring friend, and a big brother.

According to the Fundthefirst.com page for Didarul, he was a Bangladeshi immigrant who arrived in the U.S. in 2009 and joined the NYPD in 2021. He served at the New York Police Department’s 47th Precinct in the Bronx.

Officer Didarul Islam was hailed as a “hero” who died “doing what he does best”

During a press conference on Monday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that the NYPD officer was among the four victims. The Mayor also revealed that the assailant was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the building’s 33rd floor. While addressing the media, Adams said:

“He was doing what he does best and all members of the police department carry out. He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers.”

Mayor Adams described Didarul Islam as a “person of faith” and highlighted that he was a Bangladeshi immigrant before adding:

“He embodies what this city is all about. He's a true blue New Yorker—not only in the uniform he wore, but in his spirit and energy of loving this city.”

The NYC Mayor called Islam a “hero” and stated that he was his father’s only son. After Adams, NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch spoke about the slain officer. She revealed that Didarul Islam was a father of two, while his wife was expecting another child. Tisch described the officer’s death as an “ultimate sacrifice” and asserted:

“He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm's way.”

Commissioner Tisch, who got emotional while talking, also stated that Officer Didarul Islam “died as he lived, a hero.” The president of the NYC PBA (Police Benevolent Association), Patrick Hendry, also addressed the media and offered his condolences to the victims’ families. He called Officer Islam “our hero brother, who gave his life for this city.”

Later, Mayor Adams announced that the flags on all city buildings and stationary flagstaffs across the five boroughs will be lowered to half-staff as a tribute to Officer Islam and the other victims.
