Actor Matthew Lawrence shared his hope to use artificial intelligence to bring back Robin Williams’ voice. He talked about this idea during an interview at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25. Lawrence, who acted with Williams in the 1993 movie Mrs. Doubtfire, reflected on the power of Williams’ voice and mentioned his plan to create something special with it, but if Williams’ family approves.
“Obviously, with the respect and with the okay from his family, I would love to do something really special with his voice, because I know for a generation, that voice is just so iconic,” Lawrence said.
Talking with Entertainment Weekly, Lawrence said the idea came from a commercial Williams had done in the past where a robotic voiceover was used. Lawrence shared that the performance stuck with him because it seemed to reflect certain parts of today’s tech-driven world. Remembering this, along with the growing presence of A.I., led Lawrence to think about using technology to save and maybe even bring back Williams’ unforgettable voice.
He stressed the importance of using the voice and said he would move forward with the project after getting full approval from Williams’ family. Lawrence thinks Williams’ voice holds meaning that goes beyond their personal bond, calling it a sound that people from different generations recognize. He even brought up a possible use for the voice, like adding it to a navigation system, which he felt could offer both a sense of nostalgia and a fresh twist.
Lawrence talked about his bond with Williams and remembered how the actor treated him with unexpected maturity when they worked together on the set of Mrs. Doubtfire. He mentioned that after filming wrapped, Williams kept reaching out, giving him support and advice that shaped his life in many ways. In other interviews, like one he did for PEOPLE magazine, Lawrence explained how Williams shared tips and wisdom about balancing life in the spotlight with private life within the world of entertainment.
The movie Mrs. Doubtfire—featuring Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan, Lisa Jakub, and Mara Wilson—is still one of the most recognizable films today. Its story follows a father who pretends to be a female housekeeper so he can spend more time with his kids. The film received several awards, including one Academy Award and two Golden Globes.
Robin Williams died in August 2014 at 63 years old. His passing left many grieving, and people continue to honor his work in comedy, voice acting, and drama. As artificial intelligence keeps pushing discussions about preserving artists' digital legacies, Lawrence’s remarks add to the debate about ethical and creative concerns with recreating performers after they’ve passed.
Lawrence’s words hint at rising efforts to use technology to preserve the memory of iconic artists like Williams, though no official project has been revealed yet.
