The hook-wielding killer is back in I Know What You Did Last Summer, a reboot of the 1997 slasher hit. The movie hit the theaters on July 18, 2025. Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, it stars Sarah Pidgeon, Chase Sui Wonders, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King and Madelyn Cline as the group of friends who are being hunted down by the anonymous murderer.
Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt reprised their roles as Ray Bronson and Julie James, survivors of the 1997 Southport massacre from the original film. The official synopsis of the movie reads:
"When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences."
It continues:
"A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer … and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help."
In true I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise fashion, the movie has a post-credit scene, which has left plenty of room for a sequel. Fans of 1998's I Still Know What You Did Last Summer will be thrilled with this scene.
After the ending of I Know What You Did Last Summer reveals who the killer is, it seems as though that is the end of the story. However, the post-credit scene changes that by adding another layer of mystery to it.
I Still Know What You Did Last Summer's Brandy Norwood reprises her character as Karla Wilson for a cameo in the post-credit scene. Karla, Julie's college roommate and survivor, is watching reports of the murders on the news and muses to her husband that she hopes Julie is getting therapy considering how much she has been through.
There is a knock on the door, and Karla opens the door to find Julie, who warns her that they both are in danger. Then, Julie shows Karla a picture of the two of them, in which the latter's face is crossed out. The accompanying note reads, "It's not over." Karla asks, "Who are we f***ing up this time?" to which Julie replies, "I was really hoping you were going to say that."
This means that if I Know What You Did Last Summer performs well, a sequel might get greenlit considering the post-credit scene left the audience on a cliffhanger. With Julie having survived the murder spree again and Karla having no qualms about joining her to escape the killer after them, a sequel seems imminent.
While Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.'s appearances in the movie were announced before the movie's release and Brandy Norwood's cameo was a surprise. Like Sarah Michelle Gellar who also made a cameo appearance Norwood had done her best to keep fans in the dark about her appearance in the movie.
In an interview with IndieWire published on July 19, 2025 director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson opened up about Norwood's cameo.
"I always wanted Brandy in the film, but I wanted to make sure that it felt true to the story we were telling and the characters and the tapestry," Robinson said.
