The sister of hockey players Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau, who died tragically in an automobile accident a year ago, got married on July 11. The Gaudreau brothers have two sisters, Kristen and Katie Gaudreau, as per Life & Style Weekly. Kristen is the oldest sibling in the family, followed by Johnny and Matthew, who were 31 years old and 29 years old, respectively, at the time of their deaths in August 2024.
Katie, the youngest Gaudreau sibling, married her high school sweetheart, Devin Joyce. She was set to tie the knot with her fiancé a day after tragedy struck the family when a drunk motorist crashed into Matthew and Johny Gaudreau, who had been cycling in New Jersey at the time, according to The Guardian. Katie had postponed her nuptials to grieve her brothers’ deaths at the time.
Life & Style Weekly notes Katie works as a dance teacher after dancing competitively in college. Kristen, meanwhile, works for a special needs school, as per NHL.com.
Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau’s widows, Madeline and Meredith Gaudreau, were also part of Katie’s wedding. As per US Weekly, the sisters-in-law posed together in matching dresses at the wedding.
A couple of months before her wedding, Katie Gaudreau took to Instagram to debut a tattoo of two birds that she got in honor of her brothers, Matthew and Johnny Gaudreau. She also posted an image of the four Gaudreau siblings and wrote,
“Forever us four.”
Katie also shared that she was making a video for her wedding and wanted to include snapshots from life with her brothers. Posting clips that she discovered of all the Gaudreau siblings from their sister Kristen’s wedding, she wrote,
“kjmk forever. I am making the most special video for our wedding featuring the boys and their best dance moves and I found these amazing videos in Kristen’s wedding video. I just had to share. I hope one day my future children have a bond exactly like us four. On the look out for all videos anyone has of them busting it down on the dance floor, kitchen, country concerts, or them just being them.”
Earlier in the year, Katie wrote an emotional message on Instagram during New Year’s, mourning both her brothers’ passing. Alongside clips of her family, she mulled over the year that passed and wrote,
"2024 I hate you. You went from what should have been the best year of my life to the worst. You taught me that life is cruel and unfair. You made me feel so small and so lost but you didn’t get the best of me because I have come out stronger and wiser. 2025 I am not sure how to feel about you yet because I don’t know how we leave 2024 like this.”
The Gaudreau family lent their support to the Gaudreau Family 5K at the end of May, an event that was held in honor of the brothers and raised funds for a school for special needs children, the Archbishop Damiano School as per NHL.com.
Johnny Gaudreau who played hockey with the Columbus Blue Jackets is survived by his wife, Meredith and their three children, the youngest of whom was born after he passed away. Meanwhile, Matthew who previously played for the American Hockey League and was a coach at the time of his death is survived by his wife, Madeline. The couple’s first son was born a few months after Matthew’s death. Both widows currently run the John and Matthew Gaudreau Foundation.
