WATCH: Trevor Noah Says Leaving The Daily Show is a 'Joyous Thing'

Noah opened up to Jimmy Fallon about his decision to pass the hosting baton.
  • Trevor Noah isn't having any second thoughts about leaving The Daily Show behind.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Noah opened up about his decision to move on and explained why he thinks the whole transition is a "joyous" affair.

When Fallon asked him why he was leaving, Noah simply responded, "why not?". "It's funny... people ask you this question as if you're telling them bad news... I think everybody has gone through a period of looking at their lives. Every single person. We were in our apartments for two years. You know, the world changed. We experienced collective grief. I think if you don't look at your life and think about what you'd like to do differently, then you haven't experienced what we've all experienced, you know?"

"I think of this as a joyous thing," Noah continued. "I lived through a crazy time, I shared it with people who were kind enough to share it with me. We went through something. And what's on the other side? I don't take anything for granted anymore. I don't believe that life is a given. I don't assume that things will come to me.... This is it. This is time."

Noah then joked about how he was leaving at a good time, because he felt as though he hadn't overstayed his welcome. "Leave when it's still good. Leave when you still love it. Leave when you still have the energy to enjoy it. I still have three months to have a ton of fun with everybody at the show, and I'm gonna do that."

When asked about what's next, Noah told Fallon he plans on doing "everything", including "drumming lessons" from Questlove, stand-up comedy around the world, producing, and spending more time with his family in South Africa.

Noah surprised viewers in September when he announced he would be departing the show after a seven-year run.

"This show is hard, Jimmy! We're here every day, Jimmy! Do I need to tell you this, Jimmy?! Why aren't you leaving, Jimmy?!" Noah jested, prompting Fallon to joke that he might say goodbye to his own show.

Noah's last day as host of The Daily Show is December 8.
