From Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building to Peacock’s Poker Face, whodunits are all the rage these days. So, while Season 2 of Apple TV+’s beloved murder mystery The Afterparty may have been rescheduled, it should still benefit from that wave of good will. Created by Christopher Miller, the wacky comedy explores the events of a singular night through different characters’ eyes, blending a variety of genres, visuals, and camera techniques to create a unique viewing experience. Season 1 took place at a high school reunion afterparty, but the show’s second installment is going in a separate direction. Here’s everything we know about Season 2 of The Afterparty so far.

What is The Afterparty Season 2 about?

Season 2 will follow the pattern set by the first season, reconstructing the night’s events from a different character’s perspective through a variety of distinct genres and visual styles. This time around, the afterparty takes place at a wedding, where a groom is murdered and all the guests become suspects. Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) will once more lead the investigation, alongside Aniq (Sam Richardson) and Zoë (Zoë Chao), who find themselves entangled in yet another murder mystery with a new group of colorful individuals.

Per the official description: “Detective Danner returns to help Aniq and Zoë solve whodunnit by questioning family members, star-crossed lovers and business partners, and hearing each suspect’s retelling of the weekend.”

A weekend is a considerably longer timeframe than the night of revelry that was covered in Season 1, so it sounds like the show will have even more opportunities for hilarious storytelling. We don’t know for certain who’s playing the murder victim, but new “partygoer” Zach Woods offered an interesting insight at the Television Critics Association 2023 winter press tour.

When will The Afterparty Season 2 premiere?

Originally slated for April 28, the delayed second season will premiere Wednesday, July 12 on Apple TV+. The first two episodes will debut together, with new episodes released weekly until the finale on September 6.

Who is in the cast of The Afterparty Season 2?

Tiffany Haddish, Sam Richardson, and Zoë Chao are the only actors from Season 1 reprising their roles. The rest of the ensemble cast is made up by Elizabeth Perkins (Sharp Objects), Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird), John Cho (Cowboy Bebop), Ken Jeong (Community), Zach Woods (Silicon Valley), Anna Konkle (PEN15), Poppy Liu (Hacks), Vivian Wu (Irma Vep), and Jack Whitehall (Fresh Meat).

Is there a trailer for The Afterparty Season 2?

The first trailer for Season 2 dropped on June 7, and sees Danner gleefully jumping into another case, with Aniq serving as her right-hand man. Their past experience proves handy, as she asks each of the suspects to give their retelling of the night through what she refers to as "mind movies." Everyone's got a motive, whether it's the fun uncle or the jealous ex boyfriend. And Season 2 utilizes these new faces to explore another wide set of genres, from old timey noir to Bridgerton-esque period drama.
