Archie and the gang are saying goodbye: Riverdale will end with Season 7 in 2023, The CW announced on Thursday. The drama, based on the characters from the Archie comics, is currently airing its sixth season and was renewed for Season 7 back in March.

Riverdale follows the exploits of Archie (KJ Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Jughead (Cole Sprouse), and their group of friends as they deal with the strange happenings in the town of Riverdale. The show often delves into bizarre storylines involving murder, drugs, sex, and even the supernatural.

“We had a long conversation with Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa, Riverdale executive producer] yesterday, who’s thrilled by this news," said The CW’s chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz, per Deadline. "And we’re going to treat the show in the manner it deserves. It was an iconic pop culture star, and we want to make sure it goes out the right way and that is the decision. I think they choose that seven years is the right amount, and we want to do the right thing. That’s a personal thing. As a fan myself. I do want to do what’s right for the show.”

Pedowitz also added that Season 7 would likely be just as long as previous seasons, which have been around 19 to 22 episodes. The final installment is expected to premiere at midseason in 2023.

“I am a big believer in attempting to give series that have had long runs and appropriate send off,” said Pedowitz.

To date, Riverdale has aired over 100 episodes. Recent episodes of Riverdale are currently streaming on The CW's website, with previous seasons streaming on Netflix.
