Kate Winslet and Mia Threapleton will star as mother and daughter in upcoming special I Am Ruth.
Winslet stars as Ruth, a mother who becomes concerned about her troubled teenage daughter Freya (Threapleton) as she sinks deeper into a social media addiction. The trailer sees the duo clash as mothers and daughters are wont to do, but things come to a head when Ruth takes Freya's phone and makes her get professional help. "It's what's making you ill," Ruth tells the distraught teen after she confiscates her phone.
"I'm sorry that I'm not perfect!" Freya tells her mother. "You are driving me to do this."
The feature-length special is the latest installment in the female-led drama anthology series I Am..., developed by Dominic Savage. Winslet and Savage developed I Am Ruth together. Previous installments have starred Gemma Chan, Letitia Wright, and Lesley Manville, to name a few. I Am Ruth is the first chapter of Season 3, with future chapters featuring different stars set to be announced.
This drama marks the first time Winslet and Threapleton have shared the screen together since the 22-year-old began her acting career in 2020. She currently stars in the Dangerous Liaisons TV series.
I Am Ruth is set to premiere on the U.K.'s Channel 4 later this year. NBCU Distribution is selling it internationally, though there is no word yet on where I Am Ruth will land in the United States.
