Adnan Syed will be a free man for the first time in 23 years.

The 41-year-old, subject of the hit podcast Serial and HBO docuseries The Case Against Adnan Syed, was convicted in the 1999 killing of high school girlfriend Hae Min Lee but always maintained his innocence.

After serving 23 years behind bars, Syed had his murder conviction overturned by a Maryland judge today. State prosecutors filed a motion last week to vacate the 2000 murder conviction, arguing that the team "no longer has confidence in the integrity of the conviction" and they they "have identified significant reliability issues regarding the most critical pieces of evidence at trial" after a year-long investigation alongside the defense team.

A new trial or a dismissal of charges will depend on the outcome of the prosecution and defense teams' investigation. Until then, Syed will be released.
