The Great American Recipe season 4 continued with episode 2, which aired on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 9 pm ET/PT on PBS. In this episode, the theme was holidays. The home cooks made dishes that were inspired by their family traditions and memories.
PBS gave viewers a sneak peek of the latest episode. What stood out in the clip was seeing the cooks change their planned meals to match what really mattered to them. It wasn’t about fancy plating or following food trends. What mattered most was telling their own story through food, especially about their families.
During the preview, one segment indicated that holiday cooking is not just about feeding people, it's about feeding the soul. This message rang clear through the cooks talking about food.
The judges, Tiffany Derry, Tim Hollingsworth, and Frances Lam provide advice and encouragement to the cooks while talking about each of their dishes. They did not eliminate anyone in this episode.
Like season 3, the first few episodes did not have any eliminations, giving the cooks some time to gain comfort cooking in a new kitchen and being on TV.
The episode itself focused on comfort food. Growing up with family recipes, and talking about one's emotions as well.
The Great American Recipe judges provided advice to help the cooks share their stories and provide some confidence.
In episode 2 of The Great American Recipe, each cook made a dish connected to their favorite holiday. The meals came from many cultures and backgrounds, but all were linked to family.
Some cooks said that making their dish reminded them of helping in the kitchen as children. Others shared that their recipes were passed down from older family members who had passed away.
Many felt that food helped them stay close to family traditions and people from their past.
The judges understood these personal stories. They said the food showed who the cooks were and where they came from. Instead of focusing on perfect cooking skills, the judges paid attention to the emotions behind each dish.
The second episode of The Great American Recipe adopted a similar pattern as the third season in that there were no eliminations in the initial rounds.
The lack of eliminations gave cooks the opportunity to learn and practice without the anxiety of leaving the competition.
The judges Tiffany Derry, Tim Hollingsworth, and Frances Lam provided feedback to the cooks in a generous and supportive way.
It was evident that Lam saw himself in a mentoring role, rather than a critical position, from the way he addressed the cooks based on feedback he had given in episode two.
After tasting each dish, the judges provided explanations of what they enjoyed about each dish, as well as advice for improvement.
Derry, in particular, pointed out that cooking in a new kitchen is a challenging feat.
Hollingsworth pointed out that he appreciated when the cooks brought their own stories and interpretations into the dish.
Instead of ranking each dish, the judges identified a single favorite dish, but overall acknowledged that every cook was worthy of applause and deserving of assistance.
Overall, the tone of the second episode was affirming, and supportive.
The cooks described their experiences in a way that they felt supported and were able to flourish without any anxiety of elimination.
Additionally, the three judges felt it was important to share additional and practical feedback to provide the cooks with the help they needed to elevate their food to the next level.
Stay tuned for more updates.
