Rick and Morty season 8 episode 7 welcomes James Gunn and Zack Snyder in wild new episode

Rick and Morty is an American adult animated science fiction series created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. It follows the adventures of the cynical mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandson, the bumbling but kind-hearted Morty Smith, across multiple dimension and realities. The ongoing season 8 of the show premiered on May 25, 2025, with episode 7 releasing on Sunday, July 6, 2025. 

The latest episode of Rick and Morty, titled Ricker Than Fiction, surprises fans with two cameos from the world of DC movies: the CEO of DC Studios and the director of the upcoming Superman film, James Gunn, and fellow Man of Steel and Justice League director Zack Snyder. They lend their voices to characters who are exaggerated versions of themselves.

Rob Schrab wrote Ricker Than Fiction, the seventh episode of Season 8 of the show. In the episode, Rick and Morty express dissatisfaction with the creative direction of the fictional film franchise, Maximum Velocity, that is directed and produced by James Gunn. Dissatisfied with the progress of their favorite franchise, it is rewritten by the duo using Rick's Movie-lizer.

Rick and Morty decide to remake another of their favorite series, RoboTrees, in this meta-adventure. They face James Gunn and Warner Bros. directly in a hilarious cold open, as Rick protests at the studio lot by urinating on the water tower. The two create their own extravagant sequel, full of dramatic references and cartoonish excess, and immerse themselves in a ridiculous, blockbuster-style parallel universe.

Meanwhile, Morty’s father and Rick’s son-in-law Jerry receives recognition for helping save the day and has an unexpectedly heroic arc. He uses his improved awareness from Adderall to offer important plot hints that drive the chaotic film pitch. A riff-on-ad-culture soundtrack and cameos by James Gunn and Zack Snyder, on the other hand, give the show a sardonic edge. The episode ends with a fun tribute to fan-backseat writers, highlighting the show's lighthearted self-awareness.
