Federal prosecutor Maurene Comey was fired from the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. Multiple sources reported that the reason behind her removal was not revealed. However, Maurene Comey was given a memo and was fired under Article 2 of the US Constitution.
Maurene Comey is the daughter of former FBI director James Comey. She was the prosecutor in several high-profile cases, including those involving Jeffrey Epstein, his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, and rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs. Her father worked for the FBI for four years until he was dismissed on May 9, 2017.
Under Maurene Comey's prosecution, Ghislaine Maxwell was convicted on five sex-trafficking charges and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Jeffrey Epstein's case was closed as he died by suicide in 2019.
Meanwhile, Sean "Diddy" Combs was found guilty of two counts of transporting individuals for prostitution, and his sentencing date is scheduled for October 3, 2025.
Jeffrey Epstein has gained prominence recently after netizens speculated on social media that President Donald Trump allegedly visited the controversial accused sex trafficker's private island, where minors were reportedly trafficked to perform sexual acts.
According to ABC News' July 17, 2025, report, Trump distanced himself from Epstein after he was charged with multiple sex-trafficking charges in 2019, stating he was "not a fan" of the man. After Epstein's suicide, Donald Trump said in interviews that it was "possible" that he was murdered.
During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump told Fox News that once he became President, he would declassify the Epstein files, which include the "client list."
It is worth noting that this month, the US Justice Department released a statement stating that the "client list" doesn't exist, and they will not publicly release any additional documents regarding the Epstein case. Since then, the US President has been calling out people for seemingly conspiring on the matter.
On July 16, 2025, Trump wrote on Truth Social that his old supporters have supposedly fallen for the "Jeffrey Epstein Hoax," and have focused on the case instead of his 6 months of work. The President also claimed the "hoax" was allegedly spread by the media and Democrats.
"Their new SCAM is what we will forever call the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax, and my PAST supporters have bought into this 'bullsh*t,' hook, line, and sinker... I have had more success in 6 months than perhaps any President in our Country's history, and all these people want to talk about, with strong prodding by the Fake News and the success starved Dems, is the Jeffrey Epstein Hoax," the President wrote.
Maurene Comey nor her representatives have released any statement regarding her dismissal from the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. It is unclear whether she was fired because of her involvement with Jeffrey Epstein's case or not.
Activist and journalist Laura Loomer celebrated Comey's dismissal in a long tweet on July 17, 2025. She also called for Comey's husband, Lucas Issacharoff, to be fired, as he is an assistant US attorney in the civil rights division.
