Star quarterback Philip Rivers announced his retirement from the NFL as a Charger on Monday, July 21, 2025, in an emotional message on the team's Instagram.

Notably, Rivers already played his last game during the 2020 NFL season with the Indianapolis Colts but seemingly kept his options open. According to USA Today, he signed a one-day ceremonial contract with the Los Angeles Chargers for his final send-off. In Monday's video, Rivers explained:

    "I'm retiring a Charger."

    The athlete continued:

"I think gratitude really is the first thing that comes to mind. There were so many highlights and fun Sundays... but what I miss and what I'm most appreciative and thankful for are those relationships."

Rivers boasts 137 career wins and has played 16 seasons with the Chargers. According to Celebrity Net Worth, he boasts an estimated fortune of $100 million.

On the personal front, Philip Rivers married his middle school sweetheart, Tiffany Rivers, in 2001. The couple share ten children.

Born in December 1981, Philip Rivers hails from Decatur, Alabama. He has been playing in official football games since he was in the seventh grade. According to Celebrity Net Worth, his father coached a local high school football team. Meanwhile, his mother was a teacher.

Owing to his successful football career in college (North Carolina State University), he was a popular choice during the 2004 NFL draft. That year, the New York Giants drafted Philip Rivers. However, they soon traded him (for Eli Manning) to the Los Angeles Chargers (then called the San Diego Chargers). Rivers began his professional career with the team, backing up star quarterback Drew Brees. However, he got his chance to shine when Brees left the team in 2006. Since then, Rivers has established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the league. He played 16 seasons with the Chargers before playing one with the Colts and officially retiring in 2020.

Philip Rivers boasts a career record of 244 games, winning 134 (of which 123 were as a Charger). He holds a record 63,440 passing yards, ranking sixth in NFL history. He also made 421 touchdown passes, ranking sixth behind Tom Brady, Brees, Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, and Brett Favre.

In his Chargers retirement video, Rivers stated:

"Thankful for those 16 years, entrusting me to be the quarterback and certainly never took it for granted."

According to Celebrity Net Worth, during his retirement announcement in 2020, he revealed he planned to work as a football coach (like his father). Per the outlet, he earned a total of $243 million in NFL salary.

Philip Rivers met his future wife, Tiffany, in middle school. The pair began dating in high school. They married while in college (in 2001). The pair welcomed their first child together, daughter Halle, a year later. They also share Caroline, Grace, Gunner, Sarah, Peter, Rebecca, Clare, Anna, and Andrew. Notably, Andrew was born in October 2023.

Citing an interview with the Los Angeles Chargers, People magazine reported that Philip Rivers credits his wife for having a "steady" life as he balanced his career and family life. Noting that he couldn't have done it without her, Rivers added:

"Our family wouldn't be what it is without her. She provides a great steadiness for all of us. She's great for me also from a football standpoint as far as balancing my energy and passion I have for football. And she's the same with our family."

According to the publication, Tiffany is a fashion designer. She co-founded Hermoza, a swimwear brand, alongside Marisa De Lecce.

Both Tiffany and Philip Rivers have focused their philanthropic efforts on helping orphaned and foster children. They started the Rivers of Hope Foundation in 2009 to help them find homes. The organization raised over $1 million for foster care agencies before it shut down. The couple also launched the Change the Game campaign in 2019 to benefit diabetes research.

In a May 2019 interview with the Chargers, Philip Rivers elaborated on being a father of ten. Noting that it was important to be "engaged" and "present," even if for a short while, he added:

"I think it's a challenge, and I'm by no means perfect at it, nor is anybody, but I think what I would always tell other dads is to try to be present. Just try to be there. I think from a dad standpoint, children want our time."

During a September 2020 interview with Indy Star, Philip Rivers explained his eldest, Halle, 23, was very much like her mother. He noted she was quiet and strong. The retired footballer noted Caroline, 18, was "a lot" like him, noting she was a "go-getter" and "strong-willed."

Rivers described Grace, 17, as a combo of her parents. Calling her "versatile," he noted she was "capable of fitting in almost anywhere." Much like her older sisters, she, too, is interested in sports.

Philip and Tiffany welcomed their eldest son in 2008. He was 5 when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The athlete described Gunner as someone having encyclopedic knowledge of all sports. He also enjoys playing a variety of sports but gets his temperament from his mother.

Philip Rivers revealed Sarah, 14, has a "big personality" and "loves to talk." Meanwhile, he described her brother Peter, 13, as an "old soul" who loves baseball, golf, hunting, and fishing.

Rebecca, 11, and Clare, 9, share a birthday (October 28). Rivers revealed the former was "strong-willed." Meanwhile, the Rivers family welcomed Anna in March 2019 and Andrew in October 2023.
