Julianne Moore is returning to TV to lead Mary & George

After taking on her first TV drama leading role in Apple TV+ miniseries Lisey's Story last year, Moore will headline AMC's upcoming period drama. Based on the true story of Countess Mary Villiers and her son George, the eight-episode limited series will explore how the duo rose from unremarkable circumstances and embedded themselves with the royal family to become one of the richest, most influential families in British history.

Mary & George is created by DC Moore (Killing EveTemple) and Oliver Hermanus (MoffieLiving) will serve as lead director. The series is inspired by Benjamin Woolley's book The King's Assassin.

"Mary Villiers was a woman who through her own actions rose to become a powerful and influential figure in Jacobean London," said Julianne Moore. "It's a daunting but exhilarating challenge to bring her to life on screen."

Mary & George is set to start filming in early 2023.
