The game’s not over yet — The CW has renewed All American for a seventh season. The catch? Viewers will have to wait until next year to see football star Spencer James (Daniel Ezra) and his teammates back on TV. The series, which has showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll at the helm, will return in 2025 for an abbreviated 13-episode season. The news comes after Season 6, which is currently airing, was expanded from 13 to 15 episodes in a rare move for the network.

“Through six seasons, All American remains a top-performer for The CW as the network’s most-watched series across all linear and digital platforms,” Brad Schwartz, president of entertainment at The CW, said via a press release.

The show’s fate hung in the balance until now. All American is one of the last scripted shows on The CW prior to Nexstar’s acquisition in 2022, which was previously a haven for teen drama and superhero staples like Riverdale, Legacies, and Batwoman. But under Nexstar, which acquired The CW in 2022, it’s now focused on big-tent audiences and cost-cutting. Another scripted series, the Jared Padalicki-led Walker, was recently axed after four seasons; Superman & Lois will wrap up this fall. Another thing that makes All American unique is that it falls under the Netflix deal with WBTV and CBS Studios.

All American recently aired its 100th episode, a rare milestone nowadays. But while it’s certainly welcome news to see a teen drama renewed, Season 7 could also result in big changes for the long-running series — there are rumors of a cast overhaul, for instance. “I’ve been talking to the studio about some possibilities, so the ideas are there, and the interest is definitely there,” Okoro Carroll told The Hollywood Reporter back in April in regards to future seasons. “We’ll see what happens.”

The fate of spin-off All American: Homecoming, which premiered on The CW in 2022 and will return for Season 3 in July, is still unknown. In addition to the All American renewal, The CW has just picked up Penn & Teller: Fool Us for an 11th season and The Chosen for a fourth. The Season 6 finale of All American airs Monday, July 15.
