Seth MacFarlane calls The Orville's first season "a tonal experiment"

“This show was a tonal experiment of sorts,” MacFarlane said at Comic-Con, noting that “different stories call for different tones.” He added: “We were trying something kind of difficult but the pleasant surprise for me was the fans and the viewers were willing to let us tell a story.” MacFarlane also said The Orville was "a little misrepresented" as a comedy by Fox marketing, adding: “I think what you’re going to see in Season 2 is a show that’s even more comfortable in its footing in terms of existing in that goldilocks zone.
