CNN removes "squeezeback" ads in response to backlash over Applebee's commercial during Ukraine coverage

Instead of cutting away from its coverage of Russia's invasion of Ukraine for commercial breaks, CNN generated online backlash by showing splitscreen images of the carefree ads, including Applebee's, along with its coverage. “Squeezeback” ads reduce the size of advertisement to allow content to run around it. In a statement, Applebee's said the ad "never should have aired, and we are disappointed in the actions of the network."
