Carolla, Kimmel's close friend and former Man Show colleague, has been Jimmy Kimmel Live!'s most frequent guest, appearing 55 times and at least once per year since the ABC late-night talk show launched in 2003. Once a year except for this year (though Kimmel has had the summer off from his show). Carolla, who also used to write for Jimmy Kimmel Live!, made his last appearance in February 2019. Drew Magary points this out in writing a rant about how Carolla has become more right-wing -- he's appeared on Fox News' Tucker Carlson Tonight 11 times so far in 2020 -- as Kimmel became a vocal late-night critic of President Trump. In June, while Kimmel apologized for his "embarrassing" use of blackface on The Man Show, Carolla defended Kimmel and the sketches, saying: "We’ve lost our minds. The adults need to start speaking up." Last month, Carolla even defended toxic workplaces in wake of the Ellen scandal. "I'm no fan of @theellenshow but do we really need an investigation into whether her workplace was 'toxic'?" he tweeted. "Every job site I ever worked on was toxic. And how toxic can it be if there's air conditioning and free food every day?" Magary wonders if Kimmel and Carolla are still close. "I would tell you that Kimmel is Carolla’s last remaining tether to the establishment, but he hasn’t appeared on Kimmel’s show since February 2019," says Magary. "(I reached out to the PR flack at Jimmy Kimmel Live about Carolla. When the flack asked me what my question was, I asked if Carolla would ever appear on the show again; they never emailed back after that.) Whether Carolla has been quietly excised from Kimmel’s guest rotation or not, that didn’t stop him from instantly defending blackface gags that Kimmel had already apologized for. This is what Carolla does now. When racism is threatened, our man is THERE, ready and armed with a #WhiteLivesMatter placard. When Bill Maher is on hiatus, Carolla is there to make sure at least ONE of them is trending for a s--tty reason. He’s not a self-made man. He’s just a miserable sycophant."
