Veep's departure means HBO will soon be without its signature comedy and drama series

  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus in HBO's Veep

The revelation by Julia Louis-Dreyfus today that Season 7 will be the HBO comedy’s last will mark the end of an era for the pay cable network. "It became clear that this season should be the last season," Louis-Dreyfus tells The Hollywood Reporter. "We don't want to repeat ourselves or wear out our welcome. The story has a finality to it that feels end-of-series." HBO president Casey Bloys calls it a “bittersweet” decision. And with one more season of Game of Thrones left, it will soon be the end of an era for HBO. As Michael Schneider notes, "The double whammy is reminiscent of how HBO also lost its two biggest shows in the 2000s, when The Sopranos and Sex and the City went off the air around the same time. Back then, pundits wondered whether HBO would recover — but of course, along came Thrones and Veep, which have both been ratings and awards juggernauts.”
