Phyllis George, pioneering female sports broadcaster and former host of The NFL Today, dies at 70

After winning the Miss America title in 1971, George co-hosted Candid Camera, which led to her becoming host of The NFL Today on CBS in 1974 with Irv Cross, Brent Musburger and Jimmy the Greek. George was one of the first women to have a nationally prominent role reporting for television sports. George famously got Dallas Cowboys QB Roger Staubach to admit he likes sex as much as Joe Namath, but with only one woman. "Phyllis George was special," Musburger wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. Her smile list up millions of homes for the NFL Today. Phyllis didn't receive nearly enough credit for opening the sports broadcasting door for the dozens of talented women who took her lead and soared." George went on to become the first lady of Kentucky. Brown leaves behind two children, including CNN White House correspondent Pamela Brown.
