Pete Noyes, legendary Los Angeles TV news producer who inspired Lou Grant, dies at 90

"Described by colleagues as salty but sweet, Noyes’ grind inspired the irascible, blustery TV character Lou Grant, played by Ed Asner first on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and later in the L.A.-set newsroom drama Lou Grant," according to Deadline's Erik Pederson. Asner was nominated for the Emmy 12 times for playing Lou Grant on the two shows, winning five times. Noyes is the third person with a connection to The Mary Tyler Moore Show to die in the past week, following the deaths of star Cloris Leachman and co-creator Allan Burns.
