Michael Shannon to play former L.A. Lakers owner Jerry Buss in the HBO pilot formerly known as Showtime

The HBO pilot based on Jeff Pearlman's book on the Showtime Lakers, titled Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s, is now known as The Untitled Showtime Lakers Project after being initially titled Showtime. Shannon will play Lakers owner Buss, a self-made millionaire whom Pearlman's book says “redefines American sports, celebrity, and wealth by transforming the Lakers into a dynasty but his house of cards threatens to collapse on him—and the people he loves most.” Buss died in 2013 and the Lakers are now owned by his eldest daughter Jeanie Buss.
