MTV’s rebooted TRL still hasn't gotten its act together in Week 4

  • TRL’s problems stem, in part, from hiring internet stars as hosts who aren’t up to the task and for not figuring out its place in a social media world. “The TRL of 2017 is less a coherent show than a series of loosely threaded distractions,” says Jon Caramanica. “Each episode is an hour but feels like two. It is preoccupied with viral moments but creates none of its own, or barely anything even worth a GIF.” He adds: “Unforced errors abound, including oodles of technical hiccups: sloppy camerawork, dead air, missed cues.”
