Loki executive producer and director Kate Herron won't be back for Season 2

  • “I’m not returning,” the British filmmaker, a key creative force in making Loki, said in an interview with Deadline. “I always planned to be just on for this and to be honest, Season 2 wasn’t in the — that’s something that just came out and I’m so excited. I’m really happy to watch it as a fan next season, but I just think I’m proud of what we did here and I’ve given it my all. I’m working on some other stuff yet to be announced.” Asked if she'll be involved in a Marvel movie, Herron responded: “No, I’m just focused on my own stuff at the moment. I love Marvel and I’d love to work with them again, but my outing with Loki is what I’ve done with them.” Marvel hasn't offered any details on Season 2 other than the renewal news that was revealed in the season finale closing credits. While Herron served as director, Michael Waldron was credited as Loki's creator. As the Los Angeles Times reported last month, Herron pulled out all the stops to become Loki's director, putting together a 60-page bible of ideas for the characters, the story and visual references. "Upon learning that Marvel was developing a show about Loki, Herron tasked her agents with calling Marvel every day until they would meet with her. And it worked," the Times' Tracy Brown wrote, adding: "Herron’s enthusiasm for the show landed her a video meeting with (co-executive producer Kevin) Wright and executive producer Stephen Broussard. Believing it might be her only shot at the project, Herron came armed with so many stills and clips to illustrate her discussion of the scripts she’d been sent that a simple meet-and-greet turned into a four-hour conversation." Herron, who previously directed Sex Education, told the Times of wanting to be involved with Loki: I love villains. I think that if a villain’s done right, you don’t necessarily have to like their actions, but you have to understand them. And I think that Tom (Hiddleston), in the last decade, has brought such empathy and wit and pain to a very real character for so many people. I just wanted to be part of whatever (Loki’s) next chapter was going to be.”
