Jim Nabors dies: TV’s Gomer Pyle was 87

The Alabama native with the “rich baritone voice” was discovered by Andy Griffith, who put him on The Andy Griffith Show and made him a star playing the "addlebrained" gas station attendant Gomer Pyle. Nabors was so popular that he got his own successful spinoff, Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., which ran five seasons. Pyle would go on to host the CBS variety show The Jim Nabors Hour. Nabors’ death in Hawaii Wednesday night was confirmed by Stan Cadwallader, his longtime partner and husband since 2013.
