Iranian-American actress Tala Ashe will play the role of Zari, who will be introduced tonight. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim, whose sister-in-law is Muslim, joked of the role: “You might have heard there was this election,” adding: “Not to get political, but something that we all gravitated toward in the writer’s room was making this character Muslim.”
