Insecure’s cinematographer makes “black faces not only legible, but striking”

    Director of photography Ava Berkofsky, who was brought on board the HBO series in Season 2, explains how she properly lights black faces, especially in nightclub scenes. “When I was in film school, no one ever talked about lighting nonwhite people,” says Berkofsky. “There are all these general rules about lighting people of color, like throw green light or amber light at them. It’s weird.”
