Did John Oliver take a veiled shot at SNL by saying “it’s easy to do bad comedy” about President Trump?

  • Appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Wednesday, the Last Week Tonight host slammed comedy that hews closely to Trump’s own words — something that, as Matt Wilstein points out, happens frequently with Alec Baldwin’s Trump impression on Saturday Night Live. “It’s easy to do bad comedy, because you just need to repeat what he says,” said Oliver. “And that’s not a joke, that’s repetition. Whereas comedy, especially if you want to try to do something that’s not just happening online all the time, is an effort.”
