Chewing Gum creator and star Michaela Coel reveals she was sexually assaulted while writing the series

The British writer and actress, whose London sitcom was shown on Netflix, spoke at the Edinburgh TV Festival about being sexually assaulted in the midst of writing a Chewing Gum script. "I had an episode due at 7 a.m. I took a break and had a drink with a good friend who was nearby," she said. "I emerged into consciousness typing season two, many hours later. I was lucky. I had a flashback. It turned out I’d been sexually assaulted by strangers." ALSO: Coel announced plans for a "frank" and "fearless" series about sexual consent for BBC Two.
