Can the live TV musical survive?

Rent: Live's terrible ratings on Fox prompted NBC to scrap its Hair Live! musical, opting instead to seek a more family friendly title. They join other troubled musicals, from NBC's twice-delayed Bye Bye Birdie to ABC's "quickly abandoned" attempt to do Aaron Sorkin's A Few Good Men. Still, The Hollywood Reporter notes that ABC is considering an original production, while NBC is in talks for three titles. As one source says in downplaying the idea that TV musicals are dead: "In the same way comedy or drama has been 'dead' in the past, you're only as good as your next attempt."
