Bill Macy, who played Bea Arthur's Maude husband, dies at 97

He was a spitfire right up to the end,” producer and manager Matt Beckoff wrote on Facebook Thursday. “My condolences to his beautiful wife Samantha Harper Macy.” Norman Lear discovered Macy working off-Broadway and gave him a police officer role on All in the Family. That led to his casting as Maude's husband Walter Findlay on the All in the Family spinoff Maude.
