A Smash musical is in the works for Broadway

The potential musical will be based on the NBC series Smash, not the fictional show-within-a-show Bombshell, using many of the same songs Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman wrote for the screen. The plot of the musical will, however, "depart liberally from the series," according to an official announcement. Steven Spielberg and Neil Meron, who served as executive producers on Smash, will produce the musical along with HBO Max executive Robert Greenblatt, who was NBC Entertainment chairman went he ordered the 2012-13 two-season musical TV series, created by Theresa Rebeck. The stage musical hasn't announced any timeline.
