Actor Michael Pitt, known for his depiction of Jimmy Darmody on HBO's Boardwalk Empire, was arrested in Brooklyn on May 2, 2025, and then arraigned on many charges, including first-degree sexual abuse, unlawful sex acts, assault, attempted assault, and strangulation.
Prosecutors said four distinct incidents of domestic violence committed at his Bushwick flat between April 2020 and August 2021 underlie the accusations against him. Pitt filed a not guilty plea after posting $100,000 bail and is set to appear before the Brooklyn Supreme Court on June 17.
Court documents obtained by the New York Post describe four separate domestic circumstances at Pitt's Bushwick residence. The allegation claims Pitt first-degree sexually assaulted his ex-girlfriend in April 2020 by touching her. Then he sexually assaulted her in late 2020 and struck her with a wooden board; more charges of criminal sexual assault were brought.
Allegations of second-degree assault followed the victim's June 2021 cinderblock attack. Pitt reportedly choked her on August 7, 2021, prompting a second-degree strangling charge.
The indictment at totality comprises two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of second-degree attempted assault, one case of first-degree and third-degree criminal sex acts, two charges of first-degree sexual abuse, and one incident of second-degree strangulation.
Apart from his parts in Murder by Numbers and Seven Psychopaths, 44-year-old Pitt sprang to fame as Jimmy Darmody on Boardwalk Empire. Allegedly striking a man and stealing his phone, he was arrested in July 2022 and charged with assault and petty larceny. Deemed "emotionally disturbed," he was transferred to the hospital later that year after reportedly tossing items from a rooftop.
Pitt paid the $100,000 bond Judge Joanne Quinones imposed at his Brooklyn Supreme Court hearing after pleading not guilty on all counts. The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office said in a news statement that the arrest and accusations had been verified, stressing the gravity of the claimed growing pattern of domestic abuse.
The allegations, said Pitt's lawyer Cary London in a statement, were "uncorroborated" and surfaced years after the pair had peacefully decided to terminate their relationship. The case-related hearings are scheduled on June 17, 2025, at the Brooklyn Supreme Court. Every allegation, including those in this case, requires evidence beyond a reasonable doubt. The investigation is still active.
Pitt's legal team claims he is innocent and has vowed to challenge the prosecution's evidence; in contrast to the prosecution's emphasis on the severity and frequency of the attacks, Pitt's legal team claims he is innocent. The following months of pretrial litigation will determine what happens to these charges—if they go to trial, a plea, or a dismissal.
