Steve Carell Plays a Therapist Held Captive in The Patient Trailer

Domhnall Gleeson stars alongside Carell in the FX limited series.
  • Steve Carell plays a man in danger in the trailer for FX limited series The Patient.

Carell stars as Alan Strauss, a therapist who finds himself held prisoner by a dangerous client who is revealed to be a serial killer. Domhnall Gleeson plays the patient, Sam Fortner, who captures Alan and forces him to hold therapy sessions aimed at easing his homicidal urges.

Alan must use his professional skills to try to unwind Sam's disturbed mind in an attempt to stop him from killing again, but that proves difficult given that he is trapped and under constant fear.

"Successful therapy requires a safe environment, without anything like fear hanging over every session," Alan says during one of the trailer's most chilling moments.

Throughout Alan's time in captivity, both he and Sam must face the demons of their past and address their own repressed trauma. The trailer for the psychological thriller teases a mental game of cat and mouse, as Sam and Alan battle their own minds as well as each other.

The 10-episode series also stars Linda Emond, David Alan Grier, Laura Niemi, and Andrew Leeds.

The Patient premieres August 30 on FX on Hulu.
