Why The Handmaid’s Tale used Tom Petty’s "American Girl" for a key scene

  • Executive producer Bruce Miller said he was willing to “beg for permission” from Petty to use the song. Thankfully, the show got immediate clearance. “It’s such a complicated, mournful story,” says Miller. “'American Girl' paints a real picture of a real person. I thought it worked perfectly.”
